Is "mid" having a moment? Let's ruin it

Reader!

This round of my mastermind/live mentoring party, Shrimp Club, is extra lucky.

25% of the 2025-26 cohort signed on for another eight months, already a crew you want in your corner.

And then, a human ray of light from our 2022-23 round raised his hand to rejoin.

His name is Kory Basaraba, and I can’t wait to have him back.

He was pivotal in his round, contributing generously, giving impromptu presentations, even offering a “Scary Writing Club” for his fellow Shrimpers to crank out the words they were afraid to write.

Toward the end, someone offered him a J.O.B. he couldn’t refuse. So he peaced out of the entrepreneur space for a couple of years.

Now, he’s back in the game, and in Shrimp Club — along with his souped-up business smarts.

I asked him what made him want to come back three years later. His answer had me like 🙌🥹. Shared with permission:

“Why I'm back...
When I think about what's been holding me back, it boils down to confidence. It's such a cliche, but the whole imposter syndrome thing is real. I'm a high school dropout. I've taught myself everything I know in the real world.
And I've watched people with less experience, less ability, just go out there and crush it, get their dreams, make so much money.
And I have been playing it small, playing it safe and hiding. And for a long time, this was because I didn't feel I deserved to be at the party.
In Shrimp Club, you can't really hide.
I mean, you can if you try hard enough, but if you're actually looking to grow and get outside yourself and see what's possible, you won't find a more supportive, encouraging environment.
And at the end of the day, we all need a guide.
I'm going to use the word Sherpa. You can leave it out. [EDITOR’S NOTE: I’M KEEPING IT!] Makes me laugh to say it, but someone you trust to guide you across the high passes in the bad weather.
And so, watching you express yourself in your emails and your book for the last couple of years, I just kind of hit the point of acknowledging that's what I want to do.
I spent a long time helping other people be successful, and I want to stake my claim.
By being part of Shrimp Club and your orbit, I feel like that's gonna put me in a great position to do that.
I really love marketing. I really love the craft of writing copy and being persuasive and solving business problems.
This month I took my client from $1,000 a day in ad spend to $7,000 a day in ad spend with better KPIs. They've been in business for a long time.
They've had a lot of advisors, and I was able to show up, understand what had to happen, and guide them to these results.
I'd like to do that for other entrepreneurs (including you!).
So that's why I'm back in Shrimp Club, Laura.
I find you super fascinating to be around, inspiring. I love your sense of humor. And I love your ambition. I need more ambition in my life.”

I love that Kory knows how good he is, and that what he needs now is the push to own it.

Who among us hasn't watched every Mid Mitch and Mediocre Mona with a premium Claude account get hailed as a genius and handed their flowers, while we stay the hidden talent — the “Reader who?” still waiting to catch fire?

If you can identify with that feeling and know you’re made for more (or even more), Shrimp Club is made for you.

The bonus of a private, one-on-one Power Hour with me expires tomorrow. Apply and accept my invitation before then, and it's yours.

Can’t wait to inspire your sweet @ss into action.

"Yours are the only emails I actually open and read" - a regular reply in my inbox since 2009...and I'll bet in yours, too, once you subscribe and learn by pure, lazy osmosis to become the most compelling writer around. That said, no promises on improving your moral character.

Yesterday morning, I saw the former president of the network where I used to write promos. Great guy. Used to be my boss’s boss. He didn’t notice me. I almost said hi but it was pre-coffee, and I see him often in that exact spot, outside of Jack’s Coffee. I felt too boring and uncaffeinated today to stop and chat. We’d just recently gone through all the “How’s your summer going” and “Who’ve you seen or talked to lately” and “I can’t wait for all these summer douchebags to leave Sag Harbor”...

There’s a bro-y saying I’ve always hated, especially with respect to entrepreneurship and income: “You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” So — what — are you supposed to cut people out of your life who don’t have a proper webinar funnel set up? 👋 Bye! Can’t hang witchu anymore — your lack of steady, passive income is bringing down my average! Or can you keep that friend who doesn’t have a business, one who’s happy as a stay-at-home mom or in their dependable, unsexy...

Hey! Got book + TV recos for you. But first — I know I’ve told you about last year’s July experiment, which this year became a tradition (and pretty much seeped into August): While I didn’t take the month-and-change off work, I took it off the clock. No appointments, no Zooms, no podcast interviews, no 1:1s for Shrimp Club, nothing scheduled. You might be saying, “Um, I think that’s called ‘vacation.’” No. Remember, I was still working. Still writing you these emails. Also, posting on social,...
