I need to block someone

There’s someone in my life — no names, because, y’know — who treats me like garbage and naysays every idea or piece of writing I share.

“Someone already wrote a book about that.”

“Fun, but will that topic get anyone to buy your courses?”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but that feels kinda stale.”

“You’re a little all over the place.”

“I’m not saying it was, but do you ever think your writing used to be better?”

“That story feels like, ‘yeah but so what,’ you know what I mean? What are the stakes?”

“C’mon, you’re so boring when you’re writing! Let’s look at Threads and Instagram.”

Don’t ask me why I bounce anything off of this b-word, c-word, d-word, pick-your-word.

Actually, I know why: they already live in my head.

You might have guessed the identity by now — it’s not another person, it’s my inner critic. Needless to say, a total jackoff. And the only way to create anything worthwhile, and get in flow, and have fun doing it, is to tune their BS out.

That’s why I’m interrupting what’s supposed to be a wall-to-wall Inbox Hero promo week to invite you to my friend and book mentor Suzanne Kingsbury’s FREE session:

Transcend Your Inner Critic
Thursday, November 5th at 4pm ET

Suzanne, a former Fulbright Scholar and creator of the Gateless Writing method, is the foremost expert on getting around that shitbag voice that wants to talk you out of doing what you’re on this earth to do.

I should know. She talked me off the inner-critic ledge all the way to finishing my national bestseller, Tough Titties. Without her, the book probably wouldn’t exist.

I’ve been battling the devious, negative-nancy mofo in my head a bunch lately as I try writing fiction for the first time, and want to ice them out and stop returning their (figurative) texts. Time to block and delete, or at least mute. So I’ll be there on Thursday, for sure.

Hope you’ll join!

Hmmmm. Is it arrogant of me to find it funny that a person who’s been reading my emails asked me this? Maybe. Or...
