Hey! This woman I know got fired from her job, and it couldn’t happen to a better person. No, this isn’t schadenfreude, I’m not celebrating someone’s downfall. (Though I’m not above it — love me some petty!) I’m happy because the person who got sacked, Heather Campbell, is a 2-round Shrimp Club member who just posted a video about it on IG and LinkedIn, and check out the results: YES! YES, HEATHER! This is what I mean when I say tell your story. Telling your story, with your details, your POV, your heart, in the way only you (and not AI) can tell it, is a foundation of getting PAID TO BE YOU — the core mission of Shrimp Club. So is being visible. So is creating in volume. And in the spirit of those three things, I nudged Heather a few months ago to start posting videos. Lots. If you watch any of her reels, you’ll find it hard to believe… But she had a huge block about making them. And yet, she was such a natural on camera, and had so much to say during our hot seat calls. I assured her she’d find it easy once she started, and promised it would pay off. (Told you, Heather!) During one hot seat, she vowed to start that afternoon. “I’ll post one in this same yellow sweater I’m wearing now, so you’ll know I actually followed through today.” And she did. Cut to this week. That video about her getting the axe has had such an impact, she’s made it into a series. She’s also fired up to leverage this angle for her business, which helps women who are former corporate hotshots set up and market their own successful ventures. Meanwhile, as I write this, Heather’s video has been popping OFF. I’m grateful Heather took my advice. And especially grateful she got fired. This is the kind of thing that happens in Shrimp Club. Yesterday morning, I saw the former president of the network where I used to write promos. Great guy. Used to be my boss’s boss. He didn’t notice me. I almost said hi but it was pre-coffee, and I see him often in that exact spot, outside of Jack’s Coffee. I felt too boring and uncaffeinated today to stop and chat. We’d just recently gone through all the “How’s your summer going” and “Who’ve you seen or talked to lately” and “I can’t wait for all these summer douchebags to leave Sag Harbor”...
There’s a bro-y saying I’ve always hated, especially with respect to entrepreneurship and income: “You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” So — what — are you supposed to cut people out of your life who don’t have a proper webinar funnel set up? 👋 Bye!
